Backcountry fishing around Key West and the Lower Keys
The seasonal fishing on the flats and backcountry change every few months. Although most of the species can be found all year long, check with our fishing calendar .
Immerse yourself in the beauty of the backcountry islands of the Lower Florida Keys. Deep channels cut through mangrove islands and our gin clear water moved swiftly with the tide over pristine sand flats. If that sounds appealing, just imagine yourself on the bow of a skiff casting at fish that are moving in just a couple feet of water.
Tarpon, bonefish, permit plus other species such as barracuda and sharks enhabit the backcountry waters of the Keys. We generally refer to the backcountry as the Gulf edge island chain and the waters in between them. Shallow water fishing can be done from a variety of boats, bay boats and flat bottom boats are great for moving about the backcountry. Better yet, a shallow water flats skiff can maneuver into just inches of water in pursuit of tailing bonefish or permit. It is a fly anglers dream.
Our backcountry flats are chock full of fishing opportunities for novice to expert anglers. For kids, there are plenty of snapper, jacks, sharks, seatrout and ladyfish. These fish are fun for kids and they are plentiful which means the fishing doesn't stop. For those who want to just try flats fishing, each skiff takes two people plus the guide. Tarpon are here for a better part of the year. The strongest flow of tarpon is from March through July with opportunities to catch early season fish in January and February or baby tarpon in the fall months.
